Spray foam pricing depends on several real variables, not a flat per-square-foot number. Here is what actually drives the cost of a project up or down.
Spray foam is typically priced by the board foot (one square foot at one inch of thickness), which means the two biggest cost drivers are the square footage of the area being sprayed and the target thickness needed to hit your desired R-value.
Open-cell foam generally costs less per board foot than closed-cell foam, since closed-cell uses a denser, more material-intensive formulation and delivers a higher R-value per inch.
A straightforward, easily accessible attic roofline is typically more cost-efficient per square foot than a tight, low-clearance crawl space or an area with heavy obstruction from HVAC ductwork, wiring, or framing detail, access and complexity affect labor time directly.
New construction insulation, sprayed into fully open framing, is generally more efficient to install than a retrofit project, which may require protecting finished surfaces, working around existing insulation, or more detailed masking and containment.
