Insulating Below Grade the Right Way
Foundation walls are in constant contact with soil, which means any insulation strategy here has to manage moisture, not just add R-value. Fiberglass batts against a foundation wall are a known recipe for mold.
Closed-cell spray foam is the right material for this application: it resists moisture absorption, adds real structural rigidity, and functions as both insulation and a vapor-resistant layer in one step.

Material Choice
Why Basements Need Closed-Cell, Specifically
Open-cell foam is a poor choice against a foundation wall because it can absorb and hold moisture that migrates through concrete, defeating the purpose of insulating in the first place.
We use closed-cell foam exclusively for below-grade applications, which is denser, resists water absorption, and adds meaningful rigidity and impact resistance to the wall assembly.
